Located in an economically-depressed part of Nairobi, Kenya, Starehe Boys’ Centre is a charitable institution for academically bright but poor boys from all over Kenya and beyond – providing them with care and a unique holistic education. The Centre has within it a prestigious high school and a tertiary institute offering professional accountancy and computer studies.

Starting in 2019, the Emirates Airline Foundation sponsors four-year scholarships for 10 boys studying at the school. These students come from rural parts of Kenya, from families that cannot afford to pay school fees. They are part of the more than 900 students at the Centre for whom Starehe is the only option for a quality transformative education.

Founded in 1959, Starehe has a unique organisational system built on trust and characterised by student leadership – designed to build self-discipline, self-esteem and a commitment to duty, service and excellence. From dawn to dusk and even at night, the running of the Centre outside the classrooms is entrusted to the School Prefects who have over the years proved to be very effective in their leadership.
